Honduras wins over Panama in four sets

 

   

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, October 16, 2015.- Honduras won to Panama 3-1 (25-21, 29-27, 22-25, 25-21) on day four of the AFECAVOL Men’s U-19 Central American Championship in Teodoro Palacios Flores Gymnasium.

 

This is Honduras third win for a 3-0 record and fifteen points; Panama has yet to know victory and has five points. On Tuesday, Honduras will face Guatemala and Panama will rest.

 

The actions were even during a match that lasted more two hours and twenty minutes. In the first set Honduras jumped to a four point lead difficult to catch up and in the second they recovered from a four point deficit and they closed after losing five set points. Panama had the lead in the third and it was them who had difficulties closing while losing five set points. Set four started with a very long rally won by Panama but Honduras with good defense and Panama’s errors finished the game.

 

Despite the huge 50-39 margin in kills and 4-2 in blocks, Panama granted 55 points in errors to Honduras who led in serves 5-3 and committed 37 errors.

 

Outside hitter Carlos Mondragon led Honduras with 11 points, followed by outside hitter Juan Bonilla with 9 points. Outside hitter Jose Anguizola of Panama topped all scorers with 23 points, on 21 spikes and 2 blocks, and outside hitter Ramon Gonzalez contributed with 19 points.

 

“We were expecting powerful spikes and blocking from Panama, so today in practice we focused on working on our strategy which thank God it turned out well” said captain Carlos Mondragon.

 

José Anguizola captain of Panama said “I really can’t explain what is going wrong with us, we play well and despite we argue on the court we have harmony among us. We are the first team to win a set to Honduras and it wasn’t easy, they have a lot of energy”.

 

Marvin Ulloa coach of Honduras said “my players don’t have much height so we needed to balance the actions with good defense and drive because Panama has very tall players; my boys responded well”.
