In another five-set drama at Pipote Oliveras, Plataneros defeat Cafeteros

YAUCO, Puerto Rico, October 28, 2024.- Yauco and Corozal faced off in another five-set thriller in the quarterfinals of the Men’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSM) at the Raúl "Pipote" Oliveras court in this municipality, with the visiting Plataneros of Corozal emerging victorious once again.

This was the third match in the series.

Corozal won the first in five sets, Yauco took the second in four; now the Cafeteros are under pressure to win to force a decisive fifth match to determine who will move on to the semifinal series against the Mets of Guaynabo.

The scores were in favor of Corozal: 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 17-25, and 21-19.

The sudden-death set was a heart-stopping affair. Plataneros managed to close the set and secure the victory on their fourth match point. Thanks to an error by Mark Frazier of the Cafeteros, the Plataneros took the set to match point at 20-19, and in the next play, Julio Mercedes blocked Diego Rosich to seal the victory at 21-19.

Plataneros outperformed Cafeteros 4-2 in direct serves, while Cafeteros led in attacks 60-58, defenses 60-58, and passes 69-58.

Both teams evened in blocks and assists, with 15 and 28, respectively.

Spencer Olivier led the Plataneros’ offense with 36 points, followed by Sebastián Negrón with 12 and Ramón Matos with 10.

For Cafeteros, Diego Rosich stood out with 20 points, Mark Frazier with 18, Diego Negrón with 17, and Jessie Colón with 13.

The series continues next Wednesday, October 30, at the Félix Méndez Acevedo court in Lares. The match is scheduled for 8:00 pm.

It was the only game on the calendar for tonight.

Semifinal and Final Series Format

In the Semifinal Series, the winner of Quarterfinal Series A (Mets of Guaynabo - Winner) will face the winner of Series D (Cafeteros of Yauco vs. Plataneros of Corozal). 

The winner of Quarterfinal Series B (Changos of Naranjito - Winner) will compete against the winner of Series C (Caribes of San Sebastián vs. Gigantes of Carolina). 

The Semifinals will be a best-of-seven format, with the first to win four games advancing. 

The Final Series will begin on the court of the finalist team with the highest ranking in the Regular Season, regardless of whether they belong to the Island or Metro Section. 

Both series will use a wins-and-losses system instead of the prevailing points system.
