Jamaica outlasts Suriname for fifth spot

 

COUVA, Trinidad, July 8, 2017 - Jamaica ended its campaign at the 16th Senior Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) Men's Championship on a high with a 3-2 (26-24, 24-26, 25-22, 23-25, 19-17) win over Suriname in the fifth place playoff at the National Cycling Centre.

 

Leading the way for the winners was Jahmion Hartley with a tournament high 26 points, inclusive of 16 kills and four blocks and six service aces in the two hours, and 16 minutes contest.

 

Martin Blake and Jovanny Clarke also scored in double-figures for Jamaica with 21 and 14 points respectively as they held a narrow edge on spikes 61-59, blocks 15-14, and service aces 9-7.

 

Suriname got a team best 23 points from Gino Robert Naarden while Clyde Faser 12, Zefanio Breinburg 12, and Marc Flu, with ten were the other main contributors.

 

The fifth placed finish for Jamaica emulated its performance from 2014 when the tournament was also held in Trinidad and Tobago, with Suriname also ending sixth.
