Jamaican women earn hard fought match against Suriname

 

PARAMARIBO. Suriname, July 25, 2023.- Jamaican women also won their second game in a five thriller 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 18-15) against Suriname at the Anthony Nesty Sports Hall in Paramaribo.  

 

The opening set of the game Suriname dominated, but the Jamaicans fought back in the second set. Both teams were equally matched. In the decisive fifth set Jamaica capitalized on the unforced errors Suriname made in the end of the match. Jamaica committed 31 unforced errors and Suriname 37.

 

Outside hitter Mychael Vernon led with 21 points, joined by opposite and team captain Thomas with 19 points. For Suriname outside hitter Ketura Margaret had a game high 20 points and outside hitter and team captain Sandrina Hunsel contributed with 19 points.   

 

Ricardo Chong, coach of Jamaica: “The plan was to play our own game, because we scouted Suriname how they play. But today we had to adjust our tactics and I have to give credits to that players for the hustle and fight to gets across the line.”

 

Danielle Watson, Libero of Jamaica: “I was down in third set, but my teammates motivated me and I pushed through. We made to many simple mistakes today, but we have to play harder in the next one.”

 

Sergio Valdes, Head Coach of Suriname: “I must say that my team have not prepared enough for this competition. To play at this level we have to train months before playing these good teams in the region. Today the team played well and looking forward to the next game.”

 

Janneke Tammenga, middle blocker of Suriname: “We did well today. I must that we had a lot of unforced errors in between. For now, we have to focus on the next game, because we can still advance to the next round of the tournament.”
