Peru outplay Argentina in South American duel

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 12, 2012 – Peru prevailed 3-1 (14-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-23) against Argentina in a South American duel of Pool B in the Women’s Pan American Cup on Thursday.

Carla Rueda and Karla Ortiz charted 15 and 14 points respectively to lead the Peruvian victory. Brenda and Mirtha Uribe contributed 11 and 10. Lucia Fresco and Leticia Boscacci each had 13 tallies for Argentina while Josefina Fernández added 11 points.

“We didn’t have a good start but recovered from the second set on and got the victory,” Peru’s coach Edwin Jimenez stated. “Argentina is always a tough rival. This is a long tournament and is good to start with the right foot.”

“We are very sad because we made too many errors after a good start,” Argentina’s Horacio Bastit said. “Peru is a tough rival and they have been playing with a stable team. They established a fast pace and we didn’t execute our serves as good as we did in the first set.”

“We have a great deal of respect for Argentina and we knew it was going to be a difficult match,” Peruvian Vanessa Palacios said. “We are very glad for the victory and the good start.”

“We played a good first set but then committed to many mistakes,” Argentinean Emilce Sosa commented. “It is a long tournament and we hope to improve.”
