Peru defeat Canada to finish seventh

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 20, 2012 — Peru finished in seventh place after beating Canada 3-0 (25-19, 30-28, 25-21) in the classification round at the XI Women’s Pan Am Cup.

Carla Rueda scored a total of 16 points (3 aces) while Clarivett Yllescas finished with 12 and Mirtha Uribe with 10 for Peru.  Sarah Pavan was the leading scorer for Canada with 19 points while Shanice Marcelle concluded with 13.

“Peru put a lot of pressure against us with the serve and good execution. This was a tough match and I feel disappointed but we have learned a lot in this tournament. I want to thank Ciudad Juarez for the support,” Canada’s captain Brittney Page said.

“I also want to thank everybody for their support in this match that was very close. If we had been more perseverant yesterday or if we had faced this team yesterday maybe we were celebrating the Grand Prix qualification,” Peru’s captain Elena Kedibekova indicated.

“Peru had a good execution and reception, for us we played a good tournament in the first part, but not in the last games. Now we will be focus on our next year and next four years cycle as national team,” Canada’s coach Arnd Ludwig stated.

“Playing against Canada is not easy, we had to control Sarah Pavan and improved today,” Peruvian coach Edwin Jimenez said. “History would have been different with a complete team, but we are optimistic about the progress of our players”.
