Guatemala beat Costa Rica for first place
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, July 29, 2012 – Guatemala defeated Costa
Rica in the race for first place in the tournament of NORCECA
Group H first round of the FIVB Men's World Championship 2014 to
Poland in five sets to prevail 22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 18-25,
15-13.
Jeyson Nery was the best scorer of Guatemala with 20 points,
followed by Andy Leonard with 14 and Jose Alfredo Gonzalez with
10. For Costa Rica, Richard Smith was the top of the game with
28 points followed by Jeffry Calderon with 23 and Bryan Monge
with 14.
Jose Alfredo Gonzalez, captain of Guatemala, said: "We came with
every intention of winning the tournament. To say the truth, we
never thought we would get this far. We do have training and
positive mentality to do it and in the end, the team managed to
be united. "
Smith, captain of Costa Rica, said: "The game was as expected,
we know that Guatemala is a very strong rival, and had been
preparing for a long time. They bring youth and experience as we
do. What happened at the end was a simple mistake, these things
happen. The idea was to win this, but could not and now we are
in the second phase which was the important thing and move on. "
On the other hand, Nicaragua claimed their ticket to the second
round after beating Belize 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 26-24).
David Mayorga was the most effective man of the match, giving 13
points to Nicaragua. His teammate Tito Valdivia scored 12 points
and Lester Martinez and Kenneth Sevilla scored 8 each. On the
side of Belize, Jason Campbell and Elton Moore became 8 per
head.
