CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 2, 2011 – Cuba claimed its second
victory in Pool B by defeating hosts Mexico 3-0 (25-20, 25-15,
25-19) in front of a packed house at Colegio de Bachilleres
Gymnasium. The home girls dropped to a 1-1 win-loss record.
Wilma Salas was the best scorer of Cuba with 11 points and Kenia
Carcaces added 9. Yusidey Silie and Alena Rojas charted 7 apiece.
Mexican Dulce Carranza topped her team with 10 points.
“We tried to move our bench and Mexico played a good game,”
Silie said. “There are not small enemies and for us the team to
beat is the one on the other side of the net.”
“We knew that Mexico was a team with lower level so we tried to
move around our players,” Cuba’s coach Juan Gala said. “The
Mexicans had a good service and for moments we had problems with
our reception and could not attack down the middle. Tomorrow we
go against Chile, but we will keep playing our best no matter
who the opponent is.”
