Peru digs deep for first victory

CIUDAD JUAREZ, México, July 2, 2011. – Peruvians had to dig deep to earn their first victory 3-0 over Trinidad & Tobago (25-14, 25-17, 29-27), on the second day of the qualifying round in Pool B of the 10th Women´s Pan American Cup in Universidad Autonoma Ciudad Juarez venue.

Even though Trinidad & Tobago had an effective block during the match and was on top on most of the third set, it wasn’t enough to overcome a fast and well organized Peruvian team.

The best scorer for Peru was Mirtha Uribe with 11 points and for Trinidad & Tobago, Kriystle Esdelle and Channon Thompson had 15 and 13 points respectively.

Diana Soto captain team of Peru expressed: “We’re improving with each match, things got complicated in the third set but the important thing is the result”.

For Trinidad & Tobago, Krystle Esdelle said: “We started a bit nervous, but we adjusted well and got better with each point, we will continue on pushing because we have much more to give”.

Peru’s coach Luca Cristofani was pleased with their victory. “Trinidad took advantage of our mistakes and began to rise, my team needs more experience so things will improve,” he said.

“I am completely satisfied with the result, this is a young team that still make many mistakes, as they begin to reduce them, we’ll see better results,” declared Francisco Cruz, coach for Trinidad & Tobago.
