Argentina trounces Costa Rica

TIJUANA, Mexico, July 3 2011 - Argentina cruised towards its first victory in the Girls U-18 Pan American Cup by demolishing Costa Rica 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-6).

Argentina’s Priscila Bosio and Sol Piccolo scored 14 points each, while Micaela Tassara, Antonela Fortuna, Maria Sol Calvette, tallied 8 points. On the Costa Rican side, Yuliana Gonzalez Alfaro finished with 6 and captain Gabriela Arias scored 4 points.

“We faced a great team with great organization and work showed on the court, we lost control in our reception after their service and that affected us”, said Cosa Rica’s head coach Martin Rodriguez.

“If you want to learn to win, you have to do so by winning your matches, however when you play at this level it reminds you that you are on a formative stage, but playing in a place like this it is a special motivation for the girls”, stated Argentinian coach Guillermo Caceres.

For Bosio, Argentina’s captain this was a match played in a familiar scene, just because her team won the Baja International Cup a few months ago. “It was a good match, in a good place, now that we are preparing for the World Championship in August”, she said.

Gabriela Arias, the captain of Costa Rica, stated that even though her team lost, this is a chance to make some adjustments and to prepare for the Central American Championship. Costa Rica will face Mexico this Monday, while Argentina will play its South American neighbor, Chile.
