Canada scores first victory
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 3, 2011 – Canada recorded its first
victory in Pool A of the 10th Women’s Pan American
Cup blanking hosts Mexico 25-18, 25-15, 25-18. Both teams have a
1-2 win-loss record.
Towering Sarah Pavan led Canada with 17 points and Tammy Mahon
and Lucille Charuk added 11 and 8 respectively. Martha Revuelta
had 12 points for Mexico.
“We were able to found our rhythm,” Canadian Mahon said. “Mexico
battled hard with the crowd behind them. We didn’t allow that to
intimidate us.”
“We though the match was going to be closer and we are very
sad,” Mexican Revuelta said.
“The loss, erase our chances of making the quarterfinals.”
“It was very important the concentration of our players,
something we missed in our first two matches when we didn’t play
our game. In the third set Mexico was in there, but we
controlled with our serves and blocks.”
“We really expected a more disputed match but to tell you the
truth, Mexico is still in a lower level,” Mexican coach Mario
Herrera said. “We don’t have the international experience and
also need more work.” |
