Solid blocking carries Canada to victory
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 5, 2011 – Canada defeated Chile 3-0
(25-19, 25-12, 25-10) to conclude with a 2-3 mark in Pool A of
the Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup.
The North Americans will play for the 5-8 positions while the
South Americans will play for the 11th place against
the other winless team in Pool B.
Brittney Page led Canada with 16 points while Sherline Holness
scored 11 and Nadine Alphonse and Marie Murray-Methot charted 10
apiece. Chile’s Catalina Melo finished with 8 points. Alphonse
and Holness each registered four blocks as Canada out-blocked
Chile 13-3.
“We wanted to use the game to stabilize our skills and we did
that,” Canadian Tammy Mahon said. “Tomorrow is a rest day and we
will prepare for the next round of games.”
“We are very happy to play at this level and today we wanted to
do better but the strength and technique of Canada was too
much,” Chilean Francisca Espejo said. |
