Costa Rica ends in 11 at Pan Am Cup

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, July 7, 2011 - It took Costa Rica only three sets to finish in the 11th place by defeating Chile 25-16, 25-20 and 25-17, at the 10th Pan American Women´s Cup, at Universidad Ciudad Juarez venue.

It was a difficult championship for Costa Rica, as pointed out team’s captain Verania Willis, who had not played due to a previous injury and they couldn’t reach their usual rhythm of game. As for Chile, this is a first for them and they are inexperienced, they finish in last place.

Karen Cope and Mariela Quesada, were the best scorers for the winners, with 17 and 12 points respectively. Chile had in Francisca Espejo their best player with 6 points.

For Chile, Chris Vorpahl expressed: “Our task doesn’t end here, we must continue to look for better tools for our improvement, and Costa Rica was a good opponent.”

Karen Cope, from Costa Rica, said: “Glad for not ending in last position but concerned about how our level of volleyball has decreased, hopefully we can make a better job in the future.”

“There I not doubt that with Verania unable to play, it affected our game preparation, but we had pretty good scores with high-level teams” said Braulio Godinez.

Hugo Jauregui from Chile was simple saying: “The way I see it, it was much better to have participated than follow the tournament from home” as he knows that Chile has a long road to go, just as other countries had to do in the past.
