Cuba-2 team win two matches in opening day at Varadero
Varadero, Cuba, June 8, 2012. - The second team of Cuba was the
only undefeated duo in the men's long-qualifying day of the
sixth stop of NORCECA Circuit of Beach Volleyball, which ended
in a persistent rain that cooled the hot and sunny day on
Friday.
Yaismel Borrell and Yadrián Escobar got two sets of 21-12
against Domingo Ávila and Edward Díaz, of Panama, playing for
the first time in the history of the competition to the delight
of the confederation.
Then they beat the Guatemalan Andy Blanco-Erick Garrido 21-15
and 21-16, although the latter followed winning a tough battle
with Hondurans Jesus Oliva-Manuel Serrano 24-26, 21-14 and
15-11.
Other duos who finished the day with 1-1 were Canada 1 (Nicholas
Del Bianco / Benjamin Chow), El Salvador (Carlos Leiva / David
Vargas) and Virgin Islands (Marc Lomeli / Anthony Pippen).
Del Bianco and Chow opened the men program with a defeat to
Villegas brothers, Gilberto and Alexander, Costa Rica 2, in two
identical sets of 21-17, but they took revenge against Cayman
Islands 21-15 and 21-14.
Meanwhile, the Salvadoran Carlos Leiva and David Vargas
succumbed to Canada 2 (Cameron Wheelan / William Sidgwick) in a
game that finished 21-17 and 21-14, and also saved the honor in
his second start on the arena by downing the most low level of
the pair of San Martin (Christophe Covini / Alain Pansiot),
which won 21-8 and 21-11.
The Virgin Islands (Marc Lomeli / Anthony Pippen) were dominated
by Aruba 1 (Daniel Alexander / Eargenell De Cuba) 21-17, 18-21
and 15-10, but retaliated against their second adversary team to
win 21-23, 21-16 and 15-9, and sent them out of competition as
happened to Honduras, Panama, Cayman Islands and St. Martin, as
the system in this sex is by double elimination.
