Players of Tijuana recognized as national champions

 

Tijuana, Baja California, June 29, 2012 – Several players of Mexico’s U-19 Boys Team to play at the NORCECA Continental Championship were recognized by the sport authorities of Tijuana as members of the CETYS side that won the volleyball title at the National Games.

 

It was an umprecedented feat in the history of Centro de Enseñanza Tecnica y Superior. Players in attendance included the captain Mauricio Lopez, the libero Francisco Forte, middle blocker Leobardo Luna and setter Juan Pablo Ayala. Also present were opposite Jesus Alejos and outside hitters Enrique Ugalde, Heber Bernal and Sergio Alatorre.

 

The team won its six matches without losing a single set. They first won 25-7, 25-7 over Preparatoria of Campeche and followed with a 25-6, 25-11 victory against Preparatoria of Zacatecas.

 

In their third match, the boys of Tijuana beat Estado de Mexico 25-14, 25-14 and then outplayed Preparatoria of Sinaloa 25-23, 25-19 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal phase, they beat CETYS 100 of Nayarit 25-14, 25-14.

 

In the title match, the Bears of CETYS Tijuana prevailed against Preparatoria of Chihuahua in a tough battle that finished 25-22, 32-30.

 

 

The CETYS Tijuana team is coached by Oscar Licea Claverie who is also in charge of the U-19 Mexico National Team and several of the players are studying under the scholarship program sponsored by the Baja California Sport and Physical Cultural Institute directed by Saul Castro Verdugo.

 

The ceremony was chaired by the Fernando Leon Garcia, President of Universidad Sistema CETYS, Jessica Ibarra, director of CETYS Universidad Tijuana and Castro Verdugo.

 

The Multi-Sport Gymnasium of Baja California High Performance Center will host the NORCECA U-19 Boy’s Continental Championship from July 2 to 7 with eight teams taking part of it.

 

This institution also serves as one of the NORCECA Regional Development Centers in the region and organizes courses and seminars to help in the progress of players and technical officials in its zone of influence.
