Argentina
survives in a five-setter against Canada
ROSARITO, Mexico, June 18, 2010 - Argentina edged
Canada in a sensational five-setter (22-25, 25-20, 25-22, 19-25,
15-11) in a women’s Pan American Cup match, the first
international volleyball contest at Reforma Sports Complex in
Rosarito.
Argentineans Georgina Pinedo and Lucia Fresco
finished the match with 19 and 14 points respectively. Leticia
Boscacci added 10 tallies. Canadian Sarah Pavan was the leading
scorer with 23 points while Tammy Mahon, the Canadian captain,
capitalized 14 points. Tonya Mokelki chipped in 10 tallies.
“Facing Canada for the last four or five years
has always been a pleasure, because of the quality and their
style. We did a lot of field work because on the net they are
very tall and dangerous”, Argentina’s Coach Horacio Bastit said.
“The first set was ours, but Argentina kept its
level during the whole match”, Coach Arnd Ludwig said. “We had a
very good fourth set, but anyway I feel so proud of my team for
playing in an amazing way”.
It was a tactical battle between two brilliant
minds: on one side, Argentina´s Bastit, and on the other, the
German born Ludwig, who has changed the face of the Maple Leaf
nationals with a more aggressive style of game.
