Peru defeats Mexico to win Pool A unbeaten
LIMA, Peru, June 18, 2011 – Peru defeated Mexico 3-0 (25-15,
25-19 y 25-20) to claim first place in Pool A and advance
directly to the semifinals ot the 1st U-20 Women’s Pan American
Cup to be played on Monday.
Brenda Uribe and Grecia Herrada, with 12 points apiece led the
winners and Vivian Baella added 11. For the defeated team,
Samantha Bricio had 10.
Natalia Málaga, coach of the South Americans, expressed her
satisfaction for the victory saying that “Mexico is a very
regular team, compact in the preparation of its game, but we
need to fortify our blocking.”
Captain Clarivett Yliescas said “we are happy because we
functioned as a team better that yesterday.”
Cuban Victor Garcia, coach of Mexico, praised the game plan of
Peru. “We knew it was going to be a different battle. I was
impressed by their field defense, something very positive in
today’s volleyball and I think this will be a team to worry
about during the world championship to be played here.”
Mexico’s captain Alicia Castro said that “despite the loss we
enjoyed this game and prepared for our next objective.”
