Peru crowned at U-20 Pan American Cup
LIMA, Peru, June 21, 2011 – Peru claimed the title at the U-20
Women’s Pan American Cup after defeating Dominican Republic 3-1
(18-25, 29-27, 25-20, 25-17) in front of a sealed partisan croad
at Miguel Grau Coliseum on Tuesday.
Brenda Uribe led the Peruvians with 21 points while Clarivett
Illescas and Catherine Olemar added 17 and 13 respectively.
Brayelín Martínez (20), Yonkaira Peña (19) and Marianne Fersola
(10) finished with double figures for the Dominican side.
The home girls once again showed their improvement and the
benefits from their one-month tour in Europe overcoming another
team with solid game and tall girls with potent attack.
Natalia Málaga, coach of Perú: “This is a very important step in
preparation for the World Championship here and I am very glad
because it was one of our best games.”
Yllescas, captain of Peru: “It was the same against Cuba, we had
a bad start but could surpass the bad times. We won in attitude
and this is the result of dedication.”
Wagner Pacheco, coach of Dominican Republic: “They served well
and played a great game, I don’t have any doubts they can battle
for a medal in the upcoming World Championship.”
Captain Gabriela Reyes said: “We feel happy because it was a
great game, we lacked concentration and also attitude.” |
