Mambru pushes Dominican Republic to victory

 

   

TUCUMAN, Argentina, June 5, 2016 - The Dominican Republic reached its second victory on the first weekend of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix, beating Kenya in straight sets, 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20).

 

Bethania De La Cruz De Peña was the top scorer with 12 points and Gina Mambru Casilla the key player for the Dominican triumph with 9 points.


The Dominican Republic has now won two matches in a row at a World Grand Prix for the first time since successive wins against Italy and Algeria in 2013. This year the team has played two five-set matches in a row, losing to Bulgaria in their opening match before beating Argentina and now Kenya.

 

In Bendigo, Australia, Cuba earned its second win of the 2016 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix Group 3 after beating Colombia 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-21), with Daimara Lescay Cajigel outstanding at the net with seven blocks.

 
Although Heidy Rodriquez Lopez led the offensive line with 26 points it was Cajigel's impressive blocking performance that led Cuba to victory, their second of the weekend.

 

In Algiers, Algeria also in Group 3, Kakakhstan defeated Mexico 3-1 (25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23) behind Radmila Beresneva who had 16 points. Lizbeth Sainz and Bibi Candelas had 17 and 16, respectively, for Mexico.
