Puerto Ricans Santiago and Acevedo win their two matches

 

SEVEN MILES BEACH, Grand Cayman, March 25, 2011 – Defending champions Yarleen Santiago and Dariam Acevedo of Puerto Rico-1 triumphed in their two matches during the women’s opening day at the Cayman Islands Beach Volleyball Tournament, the first leg of 2011 NORCECA Circuit.

 

Playing in Pool A, Santiago and Acevedo first edged Vanessa Virgen and Cinthia Cruz of Mexico-2 by score of 2-1 (21-15, 17-21, 15-11) and then demolished the Cayman Islands team of Jenifer Bily and Cristin Alexander 21-12, 21-10.

 

Other teams who went undefeated in their two outings on Friday were USA-1 (Brooke Hanson and Lauren Fenarick), Canada-1 (Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney), Dominican Republic (Gina and Ginette Del Rosario) and Mexico-1 (Martha Revuelta and Xitlali Herrera).

 

Hanson/Fenarick won against Kacie MacTavish and Julie Rodrigue of Canada-2 (21-15, 21-15) and over Lolette Rodriguez and Valeska Hernández of Nicaragua (21-4, 21-8). Bansley/Maloney outdueled Brittany Hochevar and Jennifer Fopma of USA-2 (21-19, 20-22, 15-13) and followed with a 21-10, 21-9 victory over Brenda Allen and Shanicia Dyer of St. Kitts and Nevis.

 

The twins Del Rosario beat Honduras’ Gina Flores and Martha Euceda 21-5, 21-7 and followed with a 21-9, 21-13 victory against Valissia Brathwaite and Nysha Lindo of U.S. Virgin Islands. Revuelta/Herrera defeated Sharon Bovell and Mona Crawford of Barbados (21-11, 21-10) and won 22-20, 21-13 over Beatriz Rivera and Yaileen Torres of Puerto Rico-2.

 

Pool play will be completed on Saturday morning with the top three teams of each of the five groups advancing to the single-elimination main bracket.
