Marte Hoffiz attends ceremony at Foreign Affairs Ministry
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, September 18, 2019 - The
Olympic Committee of the Dominican Republic and the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs have signed a cooperation agreement
whereby diplomatic legations will support national teams
that participate in international competitions.
Mr. Luis Mejia Oviedo, president of the Olympic Committee
and IOC member, represented the DROC while the Minister
Miguel Vargas Maldonado represented the foreign Affairs
Ministry.
Representatives of National Federations attended the
ceremony, including Mr. Cristobal Marte Hoffiz, president of
the Female’s Volleyball Project of the Dominican Federation,
the most visible program in the international scene.
Another purpose of the agreement signed at the headquarters
of the ministry is that “high level athletes can be able to
promote the country as a safe tourism destination, thus
enhancing the reputation of Dominican Republic at the
international level,” the diplomat commented.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miguel Vargas, indicated
that these types of agreements create inter-institutional
synergies and promote the achievement of the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), in particular those related to
health and well-being, “which can be achieved through the
participation of actors non-state that like the Dominican
Olympic Committee (COD) have always been committed to the
constant improvement of the levels of quality in the
national sport”.
He also said that his relationship with the Dominican
Olympic movement comes from very far away.
Vargas also highlighted the great performance by the
Dominican athletes in the Pan American Games Lima 2019,
where they obtained the historic figure of 40 medals, "the
highest number reached by the Dominican Republic in these
continental games."
The minister predicted that, thanks to the talent and
discipline of each of these athletes, in the next Tokyo 2020
Olympic Games, the country will be able to enjoy great
moments “like those offered by Dominican sports stars, Félix
Sánchez, Luguelín Santos, Luisito Pie, among others”.
