TOKYO, Japan, May 14, 2016 – Towering Brayelin Martinez of
Dominican Republic led all the scorers in the match with 20
points but at the end it was the smaller team of Thailand who
came out winners 3-1 (26-24, 26-28, 25-16, 25-20) in opening day
of the Women’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament at Tokyo
Metropolitan Gymnasium on Saturday.
The scores of the first two sets show how evened the two teams
were during the early part of the match but Thailand moved one
step closer to their dream of a first ever Olympic Games after a
dominating in the last two frames.
Ajcharaporn Kongyot topped Thailand with 18 points with Onuma
Sittirak next with 17 tallies. Pleumjit Thinkaow and Malika
Kanthong added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Prisilla Rivera, Annerys Vargas and Bethania De la Cruz followed
Martinez’s production with 15, 12 and 11 points, respectively,
for the Dominican side.
Dominican coach Marcos Kwiek - “We don’t have time for looking
back on today’s match. We have many challenges that we have to
correct.”
Dominican Republic plays Peru on Sunday while Thailand meets
Italy.

Italy defeated Korea 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 25-27, 25-18),
Netherlands beat Kazakhstan 3-1 (25-12, 21-25, 25-14, 25-8) and
Japan beat Peru 3-0 (25-23, 25-10, 25-14). |
