Impressive debuts for Cuba, USA and Mexico
CHIAPAS, Mexico, May 13, 2011 – Teams of Cuba, United States and
Mexico opened with impressive debuts during the first day of
men’s action at Chiapas Beach Volleyball Tournament, the fourth
stop of the 2011 NORCECA Circuit.
Cubans Yadrian Escobar and Karel Piña and Americans Eyal Zimet
and Russ Marchewka won both of their matches on Friday and will
be pitted early Saturday to decide the top place in Pool D.
Escobar/Piña scored a 21-14, 21-11 victory over Honduras’ Walter
Sanchez and Mercury Miller and followed with a straight sets win
against Francois Fecteau-Allaire and William Sidgwick of
Canada-2 by score of 21-12, 21-16.
Zimet/Marchewka defeated Fecteau-Allaire/Sidgwick 21-17, 21-10
and then outclassed Sanchez/Miller 21-14, 21-12.
The pair of Aldo Miramontes and Juan Virgen, representing
Mexico-1 defeated Fabien Whitfield and Daniel Williams of
Trinidad & Tobago 21-12, 21-16 and will meet Julio Recinos and
Erick Garrido of Guatemala for the first place in Pool A.
Recinos/Garrido won 21-11, 21-17 over Whitfield/Daniel Williams.
The remaining pool games will be played early Saturday featuring
GUA v MEX-1 (Pool A), PUR v NCA (Pool B), DOM v CAN-1 and CAY v
MEX-2 (Pool C) and CUB v USA and HON v CAN-2 (Pool D). Friday
and early Saturday matches will define pool’s position and the
seeds in the single elimination main bracket to be played on
Saturday and Sunday.
