Mets and Changos Start Strong in the LVSM Quarterfinals
GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico, October 23, 2024.- The Mets of Guaynabo kicked
off the quarterfinals of the Puerto Rican Men's Superior Volleyball
League (LVSM) with a victory in Group A, defeating the Indios of
Mayagüez in four sets at the Mario “Quijote” Morales Coliseum.
The scores were 27-29, 25-20, 25-20, and 25-12.
Guaynabo showed its superiority over Mayagüez in several areas: 68 to 44
in attacks, 9 to 7 in blocks, 4 to 1 in aces, 58 to 47 in digs, 56 to 47
in receptions, and 53 to 23 in assists.
In the first set, the Mets and the Indios engaged in a close
back-and-forth battle, with the Indios taking the set 29-27 thanks to an
attack by Jovany Torres down the left side and a mistake by Gregory
Torres of the Mets.
Despite the improvement of Mayagüez, the Mets came back strong in the
following sets, led by Inovel Romero and Gregory Torres.
In the second set, the Mets reached set point at 24-20 with Gregory
Torres attacking well from the right side, and the set was sealed with
an ace on the next play.
In the third set, Gianluca Grasso delivered the set point at 24-20 from
the left side, and Gregory Torres closed it out from the right side.
In the fourth set, Guaynabo dominated, leading by as much as 11 points,
21-10, with an ace from Inovel Romero. Grasso gave the Mets set point at
24-12 with a powerful spike from the left, and Antonio Elías finished it
with a middle attack for a 25-12 win.
The Mets had three players in double digits: Gregory Torres with 26
points, Inovel Romero with 23, and Gianluca Grasso with 13. Kevin
Rodríguez provided 49 assists.
For Mayagüez, Zachary Meyer led with 16 points, followed by Jovany
Torres with 13 and Jail Santiago with 12.
This series will continue on Friday, October 25, at the Palacio de
Recreación y Deportes in Mayagüez at 8:00 p.m.
It was the 21st consecutive loss for the Indios of Mayagüez since the
start of the regular season.
Changos Defend Their Nest
In the other match of the night, the Gigantes of Adjuntas faced the
Changos of Naranjito in Group B at the legendary Gelito Ortega court.
Naranjito’s victory came with scores of 20-25, 25-23, 25-22, and 25-13.
Naranjito outperformed Adjuntas 53 to 48 in attacks, 8 to 4 in blocks,
42 to 35 in digs, and both teams tied with 25 assists each. Félix
Chapman and Jorge López led the Changos with 26 and 11 points,
respectively.
For the Gigantes of Adjuntas, Cristian Encarnación stood out with 20
points, and William Rivera contributed 15.
