Mexican U21 Team holds training camp in Baja California

TIJUANA, Mexico, July 4, 2014 – Mexico’s National U21 Men Team has started their preparation for the FIVB World Championship of the age group in 2015 with a training camp at Baja California High Performance Center in Tijuana.

The training camp marks also the preparation towards the NORCECA U21 Continental Championship to be played in El Salvador. That competition is also a qualifying tournament to the World Championship.

Mexico, as host country of the world championship, are secured of a slot but will take part in the continental event as part of their preparation, according to head coach Victor Porras.

Porras arrived in Tijuana this week to hold a meeting with Baja California Sports and Physical Culture Director, Saul Castro Verdugo.

“We are very excited to hold a training camp at these facilities”, Porras said. “We expect to have all the talent available to work on this process”.

Along with Porras, Assistant Coach Eduardo Murguía attended to this meeting as well as the State Medical Services Coordinator, Miriam Valdez Chapotin.

“We are very pleased to receive and host a national team concentration at this center and expect a successful training camp”, Castro Verdugo stated.

“All our support is confirmed as we prepare for many international events”, He added. Baja California will host again an age-group FIVB World Championship in 2015, after the High Performance Center and the State Auditorium in Mexicali were also the official venues in 2007, 2009 and 2013.

“We want to get the best out of this camp, with some scrimmage matches”, Porras said.

Many of the players that have been called up have had previous experience. One year ago, the FIVB Boys U19 World Championship was played in the cities of Tijuana and Mexicali. The generation that competed in that event is expected to continue their process by taking the next step.

“We have very valuable boys that participated previously and also want to give a chance to the younger ones”, remarked Porras.

The first international commitment for the Mexican U21 unit is scheduled from July 27 to August 4 in San Salvador.
