Mexico Earns Second Victory and Remains
Undefeated in Pursuit of the Title
PONCE, Puerto Rico, June 6, 2026.- Mexico recorded its second
consecutive victory on Saturday night at the 2026 NORCECA
Women’s Final Four, defeating Costa Rica in straight sets at
Salvador Dijols Coliseum in Ponce.
With this result, the team coached by Nicola Negro remains
undefeated and advances to Sunday’s match against Puerto Rico
with a chance to claim the tournament title.
Mexico had previously defeated Cuba in straight sets and once
again displayed control and consistency in all aspects of the
game against Costa Rica. The match scores were 25-16, 25-17, and
25-18.
In the team statistics, Mexico dominated 34-27 in attacks, 9-2
in blocks, and 6-3 in service aces, reflecting the superiority
they showed throughout the match.
Negro: “These matches provide important indications for our
growth”
Following the victory, Mexico’s head coach Nicola Negro
highlighted the competitive value of the tournament at this
early stage of the team’s preparation:
“Winning is obviously important because we always step onto the
court to win, but at this point in the season we are just
getting started, with only a few weeks of work behind us. For
me, these matches are valuable because they give us indications,
and today, as yesterday, I received many positive ones and some
less positive ones that we need to keep working on.”
The Mexican coach also explained his decision to rotate players
and give opportunities to members of the bench:
“Our project is not to have starters and substitutes, but rather
14 players capable of being on the court. In a match like
today’s, it is important for some of them to show me that they
are ready to compete.”
Regarding Sunday’s anticipated showdown against Puerto Rico,
Negro expects a highly competitive contest:
“Puerto Rico is different from what we have seen in previous
occasions. They are also testing new players, which is normal at
the beginning of the season. As always, it will be a battle, and
I am sure tomorrow will be one as well.”
