Guatemala to Remain Unbeaten

LEÓN, Mexico, September 13, 2026.- Mexico remained unbeaten in Pool B of the 2026 Women’s Pan American Cup after defeating Guatemala in straight sets 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-13) on Sunday at the Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato.

The hosts improved their record to 3-0, while Guatemala suffered its second loss in as many matches.

Mexico pressured Guatemala with its serve from the start and quickly built a 5-0 lead in the first set. In the second, the hosts were even more commanding, jumping out to a 7-0 advantage while keeping Guatemala under pressure and controlling the match with their offense and play at the net.

Mexico’s dominance was also reflected in the statistics, with a 40-21 advantage in attacks, 7-0 in blocks and, most notably, 10-1 in aces. The difference in errors was slim, with Mexico committing 17 and Guatemala 18.

Sofía Maldonado led Mexico’s offense with 15 points, Michelle Lizárraga added 13 and Aime Topete finished with 11. Natalia Pérez was Guatemala’s leading scorer with eight points.

On the fourth day of competition, Guatemala will face Costa Rica in a Central American matchup at 4:00 p.m., while Mexico will close out pool play against Cuba at 8:00 p.m.

Joseline Landeros, Mexico libero: “Our coach took the opportunity to give some players a rest, since this was a less demanding match than yesterdays against the United States and tomorrows against Cuba. We were also able to look at other options because we are short on players. Now we must focus on tomorrow’s match, and hopefully we can finish pool play unbeaten.”

Natalia Pérez, Guatemala outside hitter: “Playing against the home team creates more of an atmosphere and that motivates us to play. We all played well, and each of us had personal goals that will help us improve. Tomorrow against Costa Rica, we have to focus on our game and not on theirs.”
