Mexico beat a resilient Trinidad and Tobago

CORDOBA, Mexico, October 5 2015 - The Olympic qualification process in the Norceca region has just begun after the first day of activities at the Cordoba Arena, where hosts Mexico defeated Trinidad and Tobago in three sets.

Mexico won by scores of 25-22, 25-16 and 25-22 with Nestor Orellana as top scorer for the local team after recording 12 points.

Ryan Stewart and Simon Blake topped for Trinidad and Tobago with 10 apiece. Stewart even served two aces for the Trinidadian team that surprised Mexico in the first and third sets, however Mexican defense was key to solve the match in three with a 29-17 excellent advantage.

“The match was a little bit complicated for us, when trying to close the first and last set. They played very well and fought hard, but fortunately things went on in our direction,” said Jorge Barajas, captain of Mexico.

“We could not win today and struggled to close the sets, but we enjoyed to play against Mexico. Tonight’s match really worked on for us in order to get some exposure and Mexico played very well and could solve it,” Ryan Stewart stated.

“We could not win but I feel satisfied about the way my team played in the end. But Mexico could win thanks to their experience,” Trinidadian coach Gideon Dickson remarked.

“We have worked with some variations as we have some new players, some others like Julian Duarte could not be here with us due to his school commitments, however I liked tonight’s match as we could go on according to the goals we expect to achieve at this tournament,” said Roberto Vilches coach of Mexico.
