SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 20, 2015 – Mexico
pulled a sensational come-from-behind victory over Chile in five
sets (21-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-11) day two of the U20
Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup. Both teams have now an even
1-1 win-loss record.
In the first five-setter of the tournament, Mexico held the
advantage in blocks 13-8 while Chile was better 10-7 in the aces
category.
Mexico’s captain Maria Rodriguez led the winners with a
tournament-high 25 points, including three serving aces. She was
followed by Cristina Pantoja and Lourdes Castro with 15 and 14
points, respectively.
Chile’s captain Catatalina Melo topped her side with 20 points
while Catalina Pulgar, Amalia Carvajal and Laura Sotomayor
finished with 15, 14 and 12 points, respectively, in the loss.
“It was a match of up and downs for both teams and I think our
attitude was the difference at the end of the sets after the
first two,” Rodriguez said. “It was important our defense
against their soft touches as well as the communication between
us.”
“It was a well fought match and they had the ability to discover
our weaknesses,” Melo said. “Now we have to put this match in
the past and continue to play.”
“The most satisfaction comes from the fact that they were able
to recover from losing 3-0 yesterday and falling 0-2 today,”
Mexico’s coach Luis Alberto Leon said. “I am very happy with
that kind of reaction and it helps as a confidence builder.”
“They were able to turn the tables and play better than us,”
Chile’s coach Hugo Jauregui said. “The sets were very close but
they deserved the victory and we made some mistakes in the
tie-breaker.” |
