Mexico improves to 3-1 at U20 Cup

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 22, 2015 – Mexico downed Costa Rica in straight-set (25-10, 25-10, 25-11) on Wednesday to improve their win-loss record to 3-1 at the U20 Women’s Pan American Cup taking place in Santo Domingo.

Costa Rica dropped to 0-4 for the tournament and will meet Nicaragua on Thursday in a contest between Central American teams. Mexico finishes the round-robin preliminary phase with a match against hosts Dominican Republic.

The winners landed 22 serving aces led by Mitzy Gonzalez and Maria Rodriguez with 8 and 5, respectively. Rodriguez finished with a total of 14 points followed by Gonzalez with 13.

“We improved our game as the match advanced and we had consistent serves,” Rodriguez said about Mexico.

“They pressed us with their serves and completely lost our confidence,” Costa Rican Tatiana Sayles commented.

“I am satisfied with the performance of my team,” Mexico’s coach Luis Leon said. “We took advantage of the circumstances. Now we have to prepare for the tough match against the hosts tomorrow.”

“Mexico played almost a perfect game,” Costa Rica’s coach Andres Lopez said. “They didn’t allow us to play. It was a setback for us. This outcome erased everything we have improved in our previous matches.”
