Mexico keeps perfect mark at Women’s NORCECA

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, August 27, 2021.- Mexico beat Costa Rica 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-21) to keep their perfect mark at the Women’s NORCECA Continental Championship being held at Arena Astros of Guadalajara, Mexico.

Mexico (2-0) earned their second straight win and will play against defending champion Dominican Republic (2-0) to decide first place in pool B; the winner advances directly into semifinals. Costa Rica (0-2) will face Trinidad and Tobago (0-2) to advance into quarterfinals as third place.

With a huge 11-1 margin in serves and a 36-19 in attacks, Mexico edged Costa Rica with little complications. The home team also led 8-4 in blocks while Costa Rica finished with 20 unforced errors against 23 from Mexico.

Opposite hitter Andrea Rangel of Mexico led all scorers with 14 points on 8 kills, 3 blocks and 3 aces; outside hitter Samantha Bricio contributed with 9 points and middle blocker Patricia Valle scored 7 points.

On the Central American side, outside hitter Tatiana Sayles finished with 11 points.

Rafael Petry, Coach of Mexico: “I gave an opportunity to those players who have played less and that affected the group’s concentration that initially started, that was the reason why Costa Rica was closer; nevertheless I value our victory and the players performance”.

Pablo Acuña, Coach of Costa Rica: “In the third set my team was less intimidated and our serves worked better to position one; that got Mexico out of system and build on our opposite hitter (Tatiana) counterattack, giving us confidence but it’s always difficult to close against these teams”.
