MONTERREY, Mexico, November 8, 2013. - Mexico, host of the Men’s
Final Four Cup won 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 27-25) against Canada to
enter the competition’s final match undefeated.
This was Mexico’s third consecutive win to finish the
preliminary round with 3-0 win-loss record and faces Dominican
Republic in the title match. Canada had difficulties holding
together but in the third set they did better job in receiving
and maintained a very tight score.
Mexico had advantage in blocking (10-6), in kills (44-31) and in
service points (3-2).
Tomas Aguilera topped Mexico’s offense over the net with 12
points while Jesus Valdes chipped in with 11 points and Samuel
Cordova with 10. Canadian Dane Pischke was their best scorer
with 14 points.
Captain Tomas Aguilera took the opportunity to personally thank
Canada for making the arrangements to be here and about the
match he said “Canada pushed harder in the third and it was a
good match; my team is young and improving, it’s important for
us to face teams like them who have superiority in the region.
Overall the tournament has shown that volleyball is well
practiced sport in Mexico; asfor tomorrow, being undefeated
doesn’t mean we’ll take things overconfident”.
“Team Canada has improved with each match, as we said from the
beginning for most of us it’s our first international
competition. We prepared well to face Mexico and in the third
set we worked hard point by point to keep the score close. This
is a good experience for all of us” indicated Justin Bourdreault.
Mexican Coach Jorge Azair expressed “Canada is disciplined in
all categories and we have much to learn from them, they were
stronger in the third to the extent of being up 2 points so by
including Rangel in the lineup, my team gained confidence making
less mistakes and being able to close the match”. He also joined
Aguilera in thanking Canada for being in the cup.
“We are losing efficiency in our attacks because of unforced
errors and in the third set our receivers did a better job, but
our blocking and defense weren’t enough; it’s been like the same
story in all our matches here. I wish well for both teams in the
final tomorrow” said Vincent Pichette.
