Mexico powers past Honduras in first victory at NORCECA U17
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, November 22, 2023. -
Mexico powered past Honduras 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-6) in their first
victory at the NORCECA Girls’ U17 Continental Championship being held at
the Jorge Galeano Gymnasium in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
With a 1-1 record in Pool A, Mexico will face Nicaragua, who also holds
a 1-1 record, on Thursday, while Honduras, with a 0-2 record, will go up
against undefeated Puerto Rico.
The NORCECA U17 championship qualifies three teams for the 2024 FIVB
World Championship.
Mexico dominated with a significant 38-7 lead in attacks and 14-2 in
blocks. Honduras outperformed Mexico 3-0 in blocks. Mexico gave away 13
points on unforced errors, while Honduras totaled 23.
Mexico used its entire lineup, with opposite hitter Yliana Zúñiga as the
top scorer of the match with 10 points. Middle blocker Brenda Esquivel
contributed 8 points.
Dibanhi Barrera, libero of Mexico said, “We felt very confident on the
court. There was a lot of communication among us. With yesterday’s
defeat, we came in more united today, we did things well, and felt good.
I think we worked the attack very well, we performed well in that
aspect”. |
