SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, September 16, 2021 – Mexico secured the ticket to the semifinals of the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup after defeating Puerto Rico 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-15) in the first match of Thursday.

The winners held a huge advantage in aces (14-2) and also held a wide margin in blocking (11-6) and attacks (47-30).

Karina Flores was Mexico’s leading scorer with 18 points, including four blocks and four aces, followed by Grecia Castro and María Rodríguez with 16 points apiece.

Aida Bauza led Puerto Rico with 12 points, followed by Gabriela Alicea with 9 of her own.

Rafael Petry, coach of Mexico: “In the game we came from less to more. The important thing was to get the victory and also give other players a chance. Now let's get ready for tomorrow's game and let the competition continue.”

Carlos Rodríguez, coach of Puerto Rico: “After the first set we stopped playing. I think the fatigue factor, the lack of training is taking its toll on us, but I have to continue supporting them because the work they are doing is commendable. They are players who are saying yes to the country and you have to support them, 100 percent regardless of the result.”
