HAVANA, Cuba, March 21, 2015 – Mexico defeated Chile in straight
sets (25-15, 25-22, 25-23) and will play for the fifth place of
the III Girls’ U18 Volleyball Pan Am Cup.
In a match that lasted an hour and 13 minutes, the only scorer
with a double-digit tally was Mexico’s Kathya García with 11
points. She was followed by Karla Mireles with nine points.
Chile’s Amalia Carvajal also finished with nine.
Cuban, Ricardo Naranjo, coach of Mexico, specified that “the
girls have been overcoming the errors of the first two days.
Today we based on the service and confidence to
spike off the block. We tried to play
fast and it worked out. I think it has been one of our best
games at the tournament.”
The captain, Karina Flores, one of the tallest players in the
team, said that “as my team-mates are short, the attack needed
to be powerful and aggressive and it is where we had something
in our favour. We have improved. It is not all we wanted, but we
will fight for finishing well tomorrow. Today, even the new
players played. They needed it to gain experience.”
Hugo Jauregui, Chilean coach, indicated more optimistic that “we
improved yesterday’s game which was a bad day that any team in
this event may have. Today my pupils’ game level was higher. We
could achieve the tactics as planned and it helps us to know
what is missing to improve the technique and fitness which are
aspects where the Mexicans are superior.”
Their captain, Catalina Reyes, expressed that “this competition
helped us to improve our game level, but we do not have still
small details which come as times goes by. We lack mainly much
mind and character. With respect to the organization of this
event, everything was very good and its people have been very
sympathetic. It is my impression in my first travel to Cuba.”
