SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, July 15, 2021
– Mexico progressed to the gold medal match at
the U23 Men’s Volleyball Pan American Cup after
defeating Guatemala 3-0 (25-18, 32-30, 25-17) on
Thursday.
Josue Lopez had match-high 16 points, including
three aces and one block, as the main weapon of
Mexico. Diego Gonzalez and Axel Tellez followed
with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Francisco Gamboa was the best Panamanian with 9
points, while Jason Hernández and Pedro Pablo
Pérez each collected 7 points.
Mexico committed 32 unforced errors compared to
only 11 by Guatemala. The Mexicans had the top
hand in aces 11-1 and blocks 7-5.
Jorge Azair, coach of Mexico: “It was a good
match where we made a lot of errors –forced and
unforced. We had an excess of confidence. The
important thing was that the guys were able to
solve the problems.”
Jason Hernandez, captain of Guatemala: “It was a
very interesting match for both teams. Both had
ups and downs. I think the outcome of the second
set affected our mindset.”
Raider Lucas, coach of Guatemala: “Before all I
want to congratulate Mexico, which looked very
compact team. We came here with two purposes and
we have achieved both of them. First to develop
our boys, practically an U20 team, and to get
the pass to the Pan Am Games.” |
