SANTO DOMIINGO, Dominican Republic, July 16,
2021 – Mexico took home the gold medal at the
U23 Men’s Volleyball Pan American Cup after a
3-1 (25-27, 25-26, 26-24, 25-20) victory over
Puerto Rico on Friday night.
Josue de Jesus Lopez collected 20 points as the
top scorer of the Mexican side, including two
blocks. Ariel Hernández and Diego Gonzalez also
finished in double figures for the winners with
15 and 13 points, respectively.
Pedro Molina was the best for Puerto Rico with
13 points, followed by Jamal Ellis with 10
points.
Mexico outclassed Puerto Rico in blocks 11-6 and
got the edge in aces 5-4.
Jorge Azair, coach of Mexico: “It was a tactical
match. I think both teams made many mistakes
with the serves. In this type of competition you
can’t give away your serve. At the end, we were
able to land the serves as they were relaxed
after overcoming the difficult situations. Well,
as I say winning becomes an habit and they just
have taken that step.” |
