Mexico with strong opening at NORCECA U20
AGUASCALIENTES, Mexico, June 18, 2018.- Mexico beat Honduras in
straight sets (25-7, 25-19, 25-9) for a strong opening at the
U20 Women’s NORCECA Continental Championship at Poliforum
Universitario Morelos in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
Mexico charged over Honduras with a solid and fast performance
managing a sizeable advantage in set one. Honduras had a
considerable recovery in set two, but not enough to stop
Mexico’s force at the net.
Mexico dominated Honduras on a huge 38-19 margin in spikes, 5-0
in blocks and 6-2 in aces. The host scored 26 points on opponent
errors and committed 14 errors.
The top scorer was Mexican Uxue Guereca with 15 points all in
kills, followed by Grecia Castro with 10 points.
Nathaly Pérez led Honduras with 7 points.
Uxue Guereca captain of Mexico:
“It is motivating to start off with strength. We were expected
to win in straight sets, everything worked well. We minimized
our errors, our spikes were strong and we were able to defend.
We need to improve our serves and our velocity, we can be
faster.
Luis Alberto León head coach of Mexico:
“The competition helps us to improve with each opponent, from
weakest to toughest; our next opponent will ask more of us tan
today which allows us to improve in rhythm and stability. We
were able to use all our players; we are preparing to fight
harder”.
Nathaly Pérez captain of Honduras:
“This is our first continental championship; it was difficult to
get into our usual rhythm. This is a great opportunity for us
and we hope to perform well y prove that we deserve to be here.
Mexico’s blockers were very effective and they communicate well,
their back row offense works well and we have troubles defending
in that zone. We must improve a lot, we have to be more
aggressive in serving and we will keep on using all our efforts.
It won’t be easy facing the number two team in the world”.
Cuban Osiel Vasquez head coach of Honduras:
“Mexico is superior tan us, they play at NORCECA level and we
only at Central American level. Mexico’s attacks a stronger and
they are taller than us. My starting setter was not responding
well, she was keeping the ball too close to the net and I used
my bench setter that did an excellent job. I am glad with what
my team did”. |
