Mr. Katsumi Wakao passes away at 86
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, May 25, 2020 – It is with
great sadness that NORCECA announces of the passing of Mr
Katsumi Wakao, former FIVB Sports Events Council Member. He died
of acute pneumonia on early Sunday morning, May 24 at the age of
86.
Wakao, a well-respected member of the volleyball family
throughout the world, played a significant role in the
development of volleyball worldwide.
At the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship, Mr. Wakao received
the prestigious “Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays”
Award from the Japanese Emperor Akihito for his achievements and
work for volleyball.
“Mr. Wakao was a tireless worker who dedicated all his life to
volleyball the sport he loved,” said Cristobal Marte Hoffiz,
president of NORCECA and First Executive Vice President of FIVB.
“We all learned from his wisdom and accurate input. He will be
missed.”
NORCECA would like to extend its deepest condolences to Mr.
