NORCECA Mourns the Passing of Venezuela’s Willner Rivas

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, July 6, 2026. – The NORCECA Volleyball Confederation and its President, Cristóbal Marte Hoffiz, express their deepest sorrow following the tragic passing of Venezuelan national team captain Willner Rivas, his wife,  Mariángel Pérez, and their son, Theo in the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela.

Rivas was one of the most respected players in the region and a key figure in Venezuela’s recent international success. He captained his country to the 2025 Men’s Pan American Cup title, held in León, Guanajuato, where Venezuela claimed the gold medal, and his outstanding performances throughout the tournament earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

"On behalf of the entire NORCECA family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Rivas and Pérez families, the Venezuelan Volleyball Federation, Willner's teammates and friends, and to everyone mourning this heartbreaking loss," said Cristóbal Marte Hoffiz, President of the NORCECA Volleyball Confederation.

"Willner was an exceptional athlete, an inspiring leader, and a proud representative of Venezuelan volleyball. His legacy will remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of watching him compete and knowing the passion he brought to our sport."

The NORCECA Confederation also expresses its solidarity with the people of Venezuela and all those affected by the earthquakes, hoping for strength and comfort for the families who have suffered unimaginable losses during this tragedy.

Willner Rivas will be remembered not only for his achievements on the court but also for the dedication, leadership, and sportsmanship that defined his career. His contribution to volleyball in Venezuela and throughout the region will endure for generations.

May Willner, Mariángel and Theo rest in peace. Their memory will remain forever in the hearts of the volleyball family.
