NORCECA donates equipment to Dominican Sport Ministry
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, October 23, 2014 – Volleyball
is growing more and more popular in the Dominican Republic and
big boost is expected now that the women’s national team enjoyed
a remarkable participation at the FIVB World Championship in
Italy where they finished in the fifth position.
NORCECA Confederation and its president Cristobal Marte Hoffiz
are not strange to the new trend of the sport in the country as
the regional volleyball governing body continues to support the
different programs developed by the national federations and
government agencies.
Recently, NORCECA donated to the Dominican Republic Ministry of
Sports and Recreation all the balls and sport equipment used in
the Border Games, a multi-sport competition organized in the
provinces with frontier with Haiti, the neighbor country that
occupies one third of the Santo Domingo island.
The Games were organized under the supervision of the Minister
of Sports, Dr. Jaime David Fernandez, a former vice president of
the Dominican Republic (1996-2000) who is implementing a program
to expand the practice of the sport in the country.
Milagros Cabral, the former captain of the Dominican team who is
now Director of Sports for the National District of Santo
Domingo, received the donation presented by Nelson Ramirez,
general manager of NORCECA.
Cabral expressed her gratitude on behalf of the government
agency saying “it is a good initiative to spread out volleyball
in the island.”
Ramirez said NORCECA has a development plan directed to all the
national federations and territories members that will benefit
the growth of the national teams in the different levels.
“We believe in opportunities and our plan is to support as much
as possible the national development programs,” Ramirez said. |
