Nicaragua wins bronze medal at Men’s Central American Cup

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, November 5, 2021. - Nicaragua won the bronze medal at the XXI Men´s Central American Cup defeating Honduras 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-20) at Guatemala’s City Dome.

 

After 30 years of not reaching the Central American podium, Nicaragua won the bronze medal with 4-2 win-loss record and a total of 20 points. This is the second medal for Nicaragua in the history of the event, in 1991 they also won bronze during the sixth edition in Honduras.

 

Nicaragua held a 47-36 advantage in attacks, 10-7 in blocks and 4-3 in service points; Honduras committed fewer errors 14-16.

 

Three Nicaraguan players finished with double digits, led by middle blocker Emilio Andrews with 17 points, 3 aces included; opposite hitter Axel Gutiérrez with 16 points and outside hitter Byron Hernández added 10 points. José David Espinal of Honduras led all scorers with 21 points.

 

Bryan Orozco, captain of Nicaragua: “Our goal was to win a medal. After our first two matches we realized it was possible because we proved we’re not that far from the toughest teams of the Central American region at a senior level. This is the result of my boys’ long and hard work, winning medals at a junior level”.
