Nicaragua wins over El Salvador at AFECAVOL U19
BELIZE CITY, Belize, July 17, 2023.- Nicaragua beat El Salvador by a 3-1
score 25-17/25-15/16-25/25-14 on the second day of competition at the
XIV AFECAVOL Women’s U19 Central American Championship.
The two national teams that played the first match of the day won in
their tournament debut and battled to win to consolidate their position
in ranking.
In the first set, with a difference of eight points, 25-17, Nicaragua
started winning.
El Salvador tied in the second set at 12 recovering from a three-point
difference from point six, however, Nicaragua recovered quickly,
outplaying by 10 points to finish the set 25-15.
In the third set, El Salvador came out eager to win, and they did just
that, by a 9-point difference winning 25-16 to force a fourth set.
In the fourth set, Nicaragua showed why they were leading by two and
they won the set 25-14 and the match.
Nicaragua dominated attacks 45-31, blocks 7-6 and serves 20-10.
Nicaragua scored 19 and El Salvador 24 points on opponent errors.
Three players scored 19 points each, middle blocker Cecilia Torrez and
opposite María Zeledon of Nicaragua, and from El Salvador outside hitter
Naomi Méndez.
On Tuesday 18th, Nicaragua will face Panama at 2:30pm and at 7:30pm El
Salvador against Guatemala.

Paola Peña, captain of El Salvador:
“It was a hard and complicated match, we never laid down and always
had our heads high, we came with a goal that we’ll battle for, and
united as a team we are going to show it because we’ve been working a
lot”.
Brisa Pérez, captain of Nicaragua:
“We have won two of two matches, we thank God for winning today, but I
think in the third set we lost energy and if our energy would have been
higher, we wouldn’t have lost it, but besides that we are happy for the
win”.
