ZIELONA GORA, Poland, June 3, 2016 - Super scorer Karina Ocasio
helped Puerto Rico defeat Czech Republic 3-1 (20-25, 25-20,
25-21, 25-19) in their opening World Grand Prix Group Two match
on Friday.
The 30-year-old opposite spiker
contributed 17 points, continuing in the same vein as last
year's World Grand Prix when she was the Group 2 top scorer with
146 points.
Ocasio was helped by colleague Alexandra Oquendo with 16 points
while Aury Cruz and Stephanie Enright added 12 and 10,
respectively, in the victory. Czech Republic’s best scorer was
Michaela Mlejnkova with 15 points, followed by Tereza Rossi with
14.
Also in Zielona Góra, Berenika Tomsia played the crucial role in
Poland's victory over Canada 3-1 (25-19, 28-30, 25-15, 25-20) as
she scored 23 points. Canada's top scorer was Danielle Brisebois
with 17.
The experience of Croatia was the difference in the opening
match of the World Grand Prix in Bendigo, Australia the
Europeans beating Cuba 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-17, 25-18).
Croatian captain Mia Jerkov was the star of the match, finishing
with 19 points for the game, but more importantly showing
leadership on the court whenever her team looked in trouble.
Cuba’s Regla Gracia and Melissa Vargas had 18 and 14 points,
respectively, in the loss.
In Tucuman, Argentina, the clash between Bulgaria’s Emiliya
Nikolova, who scored 26 points, and Dominican Republic opposite
hitter Brayelin Martinez, 25 points, stole the show in
Bulgaria's 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 18-25, 25-17, 9-15) win in
their opening match of Group 2.
Yonkaira Peña and Bethania De la Cruz each had 13 points in the
loss and Candida Arias added 11 in the loss. |
