Second triumph for Cuba in Pool A

 

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, October 16, 2011 – Defending champions Cuba defeated Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-16) for its second victory in Pool A of the women’s volleyball tournament of the Pan American Games on Sunday. The Dominicans are now at 0-2 mark.

 

Kenia Carcaces was the main offensive weapon for Cuba with 19 points while Rosanna Giel and Yoana Palacios each contributed 15 points and Gyselle Silva added 11 including four aces. For Dominican Republic, Bethania De la Cruz had a match-high 23 points while Milagros Cabral and Sidarka Nunez added 9 and 7 respectively.

 

Cuba had a 6-3 advantage in service aces while was edged 9-8 in blocks.

 

Juan Carlos Gala (Cuba’s Coach): “We are happy for this win. Dominican Republic played a good match. It is always difficult to play against them. Our athletes followed the tactical plan and we could make it, but Dominican Republic is always a big rival, with a high level. That’s why every time we play, we respect them.”

 

Yusidey Silie Frometa (Cuba’s Captain): “We are happy for today’s victory. We as teams know each other very well. We have a great rivalry and we played very well today. We felt very secure in the receiving game, and we will prepare better for the next match.”

 

Kenia Carcases (Cuba’s Player): “During the last months we have prepared physically. And when you have a good preparation, you know that the strongest team has the best results, and we are waiting for that result, because we are very sure that we will get it.”

 

Marcos Kwiek (Dominican Republic’s Coach): “Cuba played very well. We always know that playing against Cuba is tough. Matches are very intense. We have shared the floor in press conferences 10 or 20 times a year. This is our life, Sometimes we win, some times they win.”

 

Milagros Cabral (Dominican Republic’s Captain): “Cuba knew how to neutralize our attack and our service. We knew it was going to be a tough match. We were trying all the time, because we, both teams always fight hard against each other, and now we are thinking about the next match.”
