Alvarez and Enright lead Puerto Rico victory
GUADALAJARA, Mexico, October 17, 2011 – Sarai Alvarez recorded
26 points and Stephanie Enright added 21 to lead Puerto Rico to
a 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-21, 25-11) victory over Peru in Pool B
of the women’s volleyball tournament at the Pan American Games
Guadalajara 2011.
Puerto Rico had a slight advantage of 12-11 in the blocking
category and held a 4-1 margin in the aces department. Enright
contributed five blocks and two aces while Alvarez had 3 blocks
and one ace.
Yulissa Zamudio and Mirtha Uribe topped Peru with 15 and 10
points respectively.
David Alemán (Coach of Puerto Rico): “We had three important
moments in the match that worked for us. We could open more
spaces and we had a double substitution when we were down on the
score. We also had two balls that they could not receive and we
made two points. Those were key plays that turned the match for
us.”
Vilmarie Mojica (Captain of Puerto Rico): “We improved a lot. I
feel we have come from minus to more. We have many young
players. Two new centers that are with us since May and a new
libero, but we are very motivated and we only have to improve
some skills to get our goals.”
Sarai Alvarez (Player of Puerto Rico): “I have been studying the
scouting report and I feel that I prepared very well and I think
that we are in a very good level.”
Luca Cristofani (Coach of Peru): “Stephanie Enright’s services
really affected us. That changed the match on the second set. It
is difficult to change things when you are on track. Elena (Keldibekova)
is injured and we have used a younger player. An there are some
physical problems that you cannot solve suddenly.”
Patricia Soto (Captain of Peru): “Unfortunately we have a lot of
injuries in our team and we could not resolve the match in our
favor.” |
