Peru in the battle for fifth place
GUADALAJARA, Mexico, October 19, 2011 – Peru
overcame Canada 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19) in a match for
the 5-8 positions of the women’s volleyball tournament at the
XVI Pan American Games Guadalajara 2011.
Four Peruvian players finished with double
figures in scoring led by Mirtha Uribe and Patricia Soto who
totaled 15 and 14 points respectively. Carla Rueda and Claivett
Yllescas added 13 and 12. Canada’s best scorers were Sherline
Holness and Elizabeth Cordonier with 13 apiece and Brittney Page
who added 11.
Canada held a 13-10 advantage in blocks while
Peru had the edge in service aces 4-3.
Luca Cristofani (Coach of Peru): “This was not a
great match for us, but we won when we putt he extra at the
right time. From a tactical point of view, Canada played much
better than us with its outside attack, but we were effective in
the middle, and we achieved that advantage while having a good
reception.”
Arnd Ludwig (Coach of Canada): “When I see on the
first three sets, we made some mistakes that gave Peru the
momentum. I was pretty confident we were coming back, but Peru
played very smart and clever.”
Patricia Soto (Captain of Peru): “We are very
calmed; we came out from a bad match against Cuba. The most
important thing was to have a good concentration and to apply
what we had previously studied about Canada and the tactical
plan worked.”
Tammy Mahon (Captain of Canada): “We knew it was
going to be a tough game. We have faced each other many times.
We never thought it was going to be a 3-0 match. We had energy
and were prepared for five sets. We had some moments when we
played as we should, but it was not enough”. |
