GUADALAJARA, Mexico, October 19, 2011 –Sarai Alvarez and
Stephanie Enright each registered 20 points to lead the five-set
victory of Puerto Rico over Mexico on Wednesday night. The score
was 20-25, 25-14, 9-25, 25-10, 15-9.
The victory earned Puerto Rico the chance to play Peru for fifth
place in the women’s volleyball tournament of the XVI Pan
American Games. Mexico will meet Canada for the seventh
position.
Aury Cruz added 11 points for Puerto Rico while Andrea Rangel
and Samantha Bricio charted 18 and 11 points for Mexico.
David Alemán (Coach of Puerto Rico): “I think the final factor
of the fifth set was because of the experience and the energy,
and so we could make it. I don´t think this was a good match for
any of us, but Mexico had a very good offensive service that
affected our reception, more difficult than in the previous
matches.”
Mario Herrera (Coach of México): “This was an ups and downs
match. On the side of Puerto Rico, they looked so tired because
they had played other five sets before this match and on the
side of Mexico, it was a question of immaturity to solve the
situation and win the sets properly. When you play with a lot of
ups and downs, you never know when you will win or when you will
lose.”
Vilmarie Mojica (Captain of Puerto Rico): “It was a very tough
match for us. It became so complicated because we made a lot of
mistakes. We have to work hard with that for tomorrow’s match.”
Martha Revuelta (Captain of Mexico): “We had a good match. We
had not played five sets for a long time ago in this kind of
tournaments. Unfortunately we could not close and complete.
There were ups and downs in both sides on the net and neither
they nor us could keep under control.”
