Canada claims seventh place
GUADALAJARA, Mexico, October 20, 2011 – Tammy Mahon scored 24
points to lead Canada to a 3-1 (19-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-15)
victory over Mexico in the match for seventh place of the
women’s volleyball tournament at the XVI Pan American Games
Guadalajara 2011.
Elizabeth Cordonier and Sherline Holness added 14 and 13 points
for a Canada Team that held a 15-5 advantage in blocks. Mexico’s
Andrea Rangel had 22 points and Samantha Bricio contributed 10.
Arnd Ludwig (Coach of Canada): “Both teams were in a similar
situation. We were close in the chances of winning a match
against Dominican Republic and Mexico against Puerto Rico. Both
teams wanted to win. My team came a little slow in the first
set. We put pressure on Mexico and we could respond. I think
that if Mexico keeps this team together in four or five years
will be really strong because it is very young.”
Mario Herrera (Coach of México): “Canada knew how to make the
right adjustments. I feel that the inconsistency in our group is
still due to the lack of international exposure and quality
preparation match. We hope to keep the continuity with this
group to work and consolidate it.”
Tammy Mahon (Captain of Canada): “It was great for us to end the
tournament with a wining note. This was a very tough week,
trying to get a victory every day, and I also want to thank to
the people of Guadalajara, the organizing committee and the fans
that were always supporting us.”
Martha Revuelta (Captain of Mexico): “We leave disappointed
without a victory in this tournament. But we know that this is a
very young team moving forward, and it is the beginning of a new
history for it. We have quality, because we won some sets
easily, but we need to be more mature and consistent.” |
