Hot start for Costa Ricans in Puerto Rico

 

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, May 19, 2007.- Costa Ricans Ingrid Morales and Natalia Alfaro enjoyed a hot start at the Puerto Rican Beach Volleyball Tournament, the third stop of the 2007 NORCECA Circuit.

 

Morales-Alfaro won their two matches on the sands of Isla Verde against Dominicans Suero-Almanzar (18-21, 21-17, 15-5) and Ramos-Flores of Puerto Rico-3 (21-15, 22-20).

 

Meanwhile, the Canadian duo of Joanna Niemczewska and Amanda Moppett won 21-15, 21-7 over Andrea Davis-Nancy Joseph of Trinidad & Tobago and took a 21-14, 21-11 victory against Julia Lewis-Lauren Whiteball of Barbados. More Spanish


Puerto Rico’s Beach Volleyball leg starts today at Isla Verde 

 

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, May 18, 2007.-  The third stage of the inaugural NORCECA’s Beach Volleyball Circuit is starting today with 20 matches in both genders on the sands of Isla Verde.

Cuba won two gold medals in ALBA Games 

 

CARACAS, Venezuela, May 14, 2007.- Cuba won two gold medals in Volleyball and Beach Volleyball at the ALBA Games which concluded here on Sunday.

Canadians working hard for the upcoming World League
 

WINNIPEG, Canada, May 11, 2007- After an intense four-day Selection Camp held this past week at the Team Canada Volleyball Centre in Winnipeg, Team Canada is happy to announce the Senior Men’s athletes for the 2007 International Volleyball season.

 

This year’s team is made up of veteran and up-and-coming athletes that will make up Canada’s Senior and FISU/B teams.

 

The First Team will return to the prestigious FIVB World League for the first time since 2000 and fifth overall, and also will compete in the World Cup in Japan in November and the NORCECA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in early January in Puerto Rico. Cuban girls lost to Dominicans, but advanced to semis 
 

CARACAS, Venezuela.- The one who laughs last laughs longest. In a gruelling battle between two teams from NORCECA, the Dominican Republic Girls Team defeated Cuba in five sets, but at the end it was the Cubans who advanced to the semi finals of the tournament at the ALBA Games.

 

The Dominicans scored a 25-20, 16-25, 23-25, 29-27, 15-9 victory over the Cubans in the last match of Pool B Qualifying Round and finished in a three-way tie with Cuba and Carabobo with 2-2 record.

 

Cuba ended in second place behind Chile (4-0) based on a better points-ratio according to regulations. The Cubans had 393 points in favour and 351 against for + 42 while the Dominicans finished with + 40 (398-358). Carabobo was – 46 (348-394). More Spanish


Cuba Men to train in Portugal and Bulgaria

USA World League Roster a Wealth of Experience 

 

ANAHEIM, May 1, 2007- -- Nine Olympians, including three who have competed in multiple Olympic Games, highlight the U. S. Men’s roster of 18 for the 2007 FIVB World League competition. Juncos won the title before record crowd

 

PONCE, Puerto Rico, April 30, 2007.- Two new attendance records were established in the Puerto Rican Women’s Superior League during the last match of the best-of-seven final series won by Juncos in five sets on Sunday.

 

A paid attendance crowd of 9,068 spectators filled the stands of Pachin Vicens Auditorium and for the first time in history the league surpassed the 200,000 fans barrier reaching a total of 203, 307 for the season. It was an extremely close playoff with five of the seven matches stretching to the limit.

Colima is the Capital of Mexican Volleyball

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 29, 2007.- The Mexican Volleyball Federation has designated the city of Colima as the Volleyball Capital of its country in 2007.

 

Prof. Alejandro Salinas de la Garza, President of the Mexican Federation, made the announcement during the meeting of the NORCECA’s Executive Committee and Board of Administration.

 

“Last Wednesday, during the closing of the National Olympiad we informed to the authorities of the State of Colima that we selected Colima as the capital of volleyball in Mexico for all the competitions they are organizing in support of our sport,” said Salinas, Executive Vice President of NORCECA Confederation.

NORCECA and Molten sign a four-year deal 

 

SANTO DOMINGO , Dominican Republic , April 29, 2007.- The NORCECA Volleyball Confederation signed on Saturday a four-year deal with Molten Corporation, the Japanese manufacturer of sporting goods.

 

The deal was signed by Mr. Cristobal Marte, President of NORCECA, and Mr. Koji Matoba, the Regional Director of Molten based in USA , in the presence of the members of Confederation’s Executive Committee and Board of Administration.

NORCECA Congress will be in Aruba next October 

 

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 28, 2007.- The Nineteenth NORCECA’s Congress will be hosted by Aruba next October 27-28.

Chicago to Host U.S. World League Matches

 

ANAHEIM, California, April 28, 2007.- Top international men’s volleyball is coming this summer to the U.S. Olympic Committee’s 2016 Applicant City!

 

USA Volleyball has announced that Chicago, which the USOC recently named the U.S. Applicant City for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, will host FIVB World League matches between the United States and Italy on June 15-16.

 

The matches will be held at the Convocation Center on the campus of Chicago State University, one of the venues used in Chicago’s proposal to become the host of the 2016 Summer Games.

A seventh match will be necessary in Puerto Rico

 

CAGUAS, Puerto Rico, April 27, 2007.- A seventh and final match will be necessary to know the 2007 champions of the Puerto Rican Women’s Superior League.

 

In a do-or-die match and before a crowd of more than 6,000 at the Hector Sola Bezares Coliseum, Caguas overcame a one-set deficit and beat Juncos 25-27, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23 tying the best-of-seven series at 3-3. The decisive match will be played next Sunday at 5:00 p.m. in the Juan “Pachin” Vicens Auditorium in Ponce.

Executive Committee and Board of Administration to meet in Santo Domingo

 

SANTO DOMINGO , Dominican Republic , April 26, 2007.- The Executive Committee and Board of Administration of NORCECA will meet together this weekend at the organization’s headquarters in Santo Domingo .

Juncos is one victory away from the crown in Puerto Rico

 

CAGUAS, Puerto Rico, April 26, 2007.- One more victory for Juncos and the Valencianas will be the queens of Puerto Rican Women Superior League for a first time.

 

The sixth match of the best-of-seven final series will be played tonight with Juncos leading Caguas 3-2. The match will be nationally televised.

 

The series has been extremely close with four of the five matches extending to five sets and a good support from the fans in both cities.

Puerto Rico and Cuba crowned in Guatemala Beach Volleyball

GUATEMALA, April 22, 2007.- The pairs of Puerto Rico and Cuba, in women and men respectively, won the second leg of the 2007 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit held here during the weekend.

Maritere Ramos and Ania Ruiz prevailed against Dominicans Margarita Suero and Bethania Almanzar after three sensational sets.

 

The Puerto Ricans lost the opening set 24-26, but came back to win the second 21-14 and then triumphed 20-18 in the tiebreaker. In semifinals, Ramos-Ruiz defeated Canadians Sarah Pothhaar and Isabell Czerveniak by score of 21-18, 21-17.

Dominicans Suero-Almanzar in semifinals

 

GUATEMALA , April 21, 2007.- The women’s duo of Dominicans Magarita Suero and Bethania Almanzar advanced to the semifinals of the Guatemala Beach Volleyball Tournament while recording two victories over Cuba and Guatemala-1 on Saturday.

 

Suero-Almanzar first defeated Cubans Ion Canet-Kirenia Bell 21-15, 14-21, 15-9 to win Pool C and then scored a 21-17, 23-21 victory over the locals Maria Orellana-Anna Ramirez.

Second leg of NORCECA Circuit set to start 

 

GUATEMALA, April 19, 2007.- Fourteen men’ pairs and a dozen of women’ duos will be taking part in the second leg of the 2007 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit at the Sports Park of Campo Marte in Guatemala City starting on Friday.

Cabral MVP in Spain as she leads Icaro Alaro to the title 

PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain.- Dominican Milagros Cabral scored 20 points sending Icaro Alaro to a 3-1 victory over Bargas Atalia PSG in the match for the championship of the Silver Division in the Spaniard League.

 

Cabral, who had 17 positive attacks, was elected the Most Valuable Player and the 25-14, 23-25, 25-17, 25-21 triumph gave Icaro Alaro the promotion to the Spaniard Super League next season.

Caguas won the first in Puerto Rican League Finals 

GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico, April 15, 2007.- Caguas won the first match of the Puerto Rican Women’s Superior League final series prevailing over Juncos in five sets by score of 25-19, 25-17, 22-25, 23-25, 15-7.

 

Caguas, who has won seven titles and has been runner-up in 10 times, enjoyed a 21 points performance from Katie Carter in route to the victory. Also Erin Moore contributed to the victory with a spectacular offense during the tie-breaker.

Team Canada Women’s Selection Camp 2007 -Invited Athletes Announced
 

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, April 13, 2007.- Team Canada Volleyball is pleased to announce the list of invited athletes for the 2007 Senior Women’s Selection Camp, to be held this May at the University of Manitoba’s Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Pairs of El Salvador reigned in Bahia Open

 

SAN SALVADOR , April 12, 2007.- The pairs of Geovanny Medrano-David Vargas and Ivonne Soler-Laura Molina, both from El Salvador , won the gold medals at the 2007 Bahia Open, the Central American Beach Volleyball Tournament.

Cuban Yunieski Ramirez and Yoendris Kindelán won the bronze medal in defeating Jorge Bolanos and Jose Gonzalez of Guatemala by 21-9, 21-14.

Roca and Polzin prevailed 21-16, 20-22, 15-8, while Cubans Ion Canet and Kirenia Ballar also needed three sets to win the bronze medal with a 19-21, 21-16, 15-8 victory over Ingrid Morales and Natalia Alfaro of Costa Rica.

Men of Costa Rica, Guatemala and Puerto Rico made successful starts in Boca Chica Beach 

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 6, 2007.- The men’s teams of Costa Rica, Guatemala and Puerto Rico II secured places in the second round of the Boca Chica  Beach Volleyball Tournament, the first leg of the 2007 NORCECA Circuit, an inaugural five-stop tour in both genders.

Dr. Acosta is categorized as “Sport Icon” by Mexican Sport Confederation

 

The Mexican Sports Confederation categorized Dr. Ruben Acosta Hernandez as an “Sport Icon” considering his many years of hard work and dedication to elevate volleyball to the position it stands now as the second most important sport in the world. 

In a two-page story published in the last issue of its magazine “Deporte Federado,” the institution points out the success achieved by volleyball since the inception of the World League in 1990, and emphasize on the attraction the sport had on TV viewers around the world during the last Olympic Games in Athens.

Poland to host the Final Round of the 2007 World League

Yumilka Ruiz MVP of Cuban Championship 

 

HAVANA, Cuba, March 20, 2007.- Constructors and Mambises won the women and men crowns respectively in the IV Cuban National League which concluded at the Ciudad Deportiva Sports Palace.

Led by Yumilka Ruiz and Yenisey Gonzalez with the accurate settings of Yanelis Santos, Constructors defeated Farmers 25-23, 25-23, 27-25. The bronze medal was taken by Selection with a victory over Dominican Republic 3-1 (17-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-22).

Mambises, led by Raidel Poey and Ariel Gil, played with better control than Energetics in their victory 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22.

Kiraly announces U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball for September 21-23

 

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California, March 20,  2007.-  With the number of beach volleyball players around the country growing, volleyball legend and three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Karch Kiraly announced plans for the U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball presented by Corona Extra, which will be played Sept. 21-23, 2007 in Huntington Beach, California.

 

Sanctioned by USA Volleyball and produced by The Elevation Group, the tournament is expected to draw more than 250 volleyball teams and approximately 1,000 beach volleyball players in the first year.  Tournament play will take place in up to 15 different divisions, including draws for men, women and co-ed two-person, four-person and six-person teams.  In addition there are plans for two divisions of masters’ categories for both men and women with one division for those players 37 and older and a second one for those 45 and older. Cuban Men’s Team to train in Quito 

HAVANA, Cuba, March 17, 2007.- The Cuban Men’s Training Team traveled to Quito,Ecuador where they will establish a training base at high altitude prior to their important compromises this year. Most of the players were part of the last year team whose main challenges are to battle for a medal at the Pan American Games of Rio de Janeiro in July and to qualify to the World Cup in the NORCECA tournament in September.

The World Cup will grant the first three tickets to the Beijing Olympic Games of 2008. Vargas and Metcalf contributed to Murcia 2002 victory in Top Teams Cup

 

MUNSTER, Germany, March 15, 2007.- Dominican Annerys Vargas and American Nancy Metcalf played key roles in the triumph of the Spaniard team Grupo 2002 Murcia at the Women’s Top Teams Cup 2006-07.

Grupo 2002 Murcia, considered by the experts as the strongest European club in women’s volleyball, defeated CSKA Moscow in straight sets 25-20, 25-16, 25-21 in the match for the gold medal.

Soto and Beltran recipients of ASES Awards in Puerto Rico

 

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, March 15, 2007.- Héctor "Picky" Soto, the stellar attacker of the Puerto Rican Men’s Volleyball National Team, was honoured as the 2006 Men Athlete of the Year, by ASES Awards of the Puerto Rico Sport Museum.

Also Mr. Carlos Beltrán, President of the Puerto Rican Volleyball Federation, was the recipient for the second consecutive year of the Executive of the Year plaque.

Farmers take double victory in Cuba

Carreras is nearing the 2,000 defenses in Puerto Rico
 

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, March 14, 2007.-  Evelyn Carreras, the stellar libero of the Dominican Republic National Team and playing here for the Bayamon Cowgirls, only needs 36 more defenses to reach the 2,000 mark for her career in the Puerto Rican Women’s Superior League.

 

Carreras made her debut in the league during the 1997 season with the now defunct franchise Girls of San Juan.

 

When Carreras arrives to the 2,000 milestone, she will be the seventh player in the history of the league that started in 1995 to become a member of the exclusive club, informed Luis Vega, the statistician of the league.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, March 7, 2007.- Venezuelan Graciela Marquez and Dominicans Bethania de la Cruz and Cindy Rondon are the leaders of the scoring categories in the 2007 Puerto Rican Women’s Superior League.

The veteran Marquez is tops in scoring and serve, while de la Cruz and Rondon, playing in their first season here, lead in attack and blocking respectively.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, March 6, 2007.- The Foreigners beat the Natives in the annual All-Star Game of the Puerto Rican Women’s Superior League held at Carmen Zoraida Figueroa Court in the city Corozal, located in the center of the island.
